Welcome
We  would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land upon which the DAISI offices are located, the Bundjalung people. We pay respect to the Elders, past, present and future for they hold the knowledge, memories and traditions of Australia’s Indigenous culture.

The Grandcarer Initiative is designed to support grandparents who are primary carers through the provision of resources, resilience building activities, and the establishment of support groups. Our aim is that grandparents raising their grandchildren will become more resilient through being:

  • Visible and supported
  • Involved and connected
  • Heard and respected.

Because we understand the sacrifice and challenges involved in raising grandchildren, and because we are in awe of the love that grandparents give the children in their care, we call Grandcarers 'True Blue Angels'.

We support a wide range of activities on the far north coast of New South Wales, including:

  • Grand-carers support groups
  • Family outings and get togethers
  • Regional forums for Grandcarers
  • Regional forums for Community Organisations
  • Annual Camps for grandparents and grandchildren
  • Regular newsletters
  • Development and production of resources about grandparenting

Contact the Project Co-ordinator on 02 6622 8002 for more information.

This initiative is auspiced by DAISI, and funded by The Ian Potter Foundation, The Department of Health and Ageing, The Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal and The Sydney Myer Foundation through The Northern Rivers Community Foundation. We have also received funding from The Newcastle Permanent Building Society, and The YWCA Communities for Children Grassroots Parenting Fund.
